Wall Putty Quantity Calculator
Estimate kilograms of wall putty required for one, two or three coats, including openings and wastage.
Calculate in seconds
Update the example values below for your actual wall, brand and project. Results are approximate.
How this calculator works
Putty quantity (kg) = net wall area in square feet ÷ two-coat coverage × (selected coats ÷ 2) × (1 + wastage percentage ÷ 100). Divide this quantity by the size of one bag and round upward to calculate bags.
Worked example
For 1,000 sq ft, two coats and 12 sq ft/kg coverage, the base quantity is approximately 83.3 kg. Add 10% wastage and the requirement becomes about 91.7 kg. You would buy five 20 kg bags.
What affects your result?
Surface texture and porosity, brand formulation, application thickness and site wastage can change material requirements. Compare your inputs with the manufacturer’s latest product instructions. For further context, see JK Cement’s wall putty guidance and our calculation methodology.
Frequently asked questions
Does rough or damaged plaster need more putty?
It can. Uneven walls and thicker coats often increase consumption. Check the surface condition and the product’s recommended application thickness.
Is cement-based putty coverage the same as acrylic putty?
Not necessarily. Formulations, thickness and recommended coat counts differ. Use the actual coverage from the product you plan to buy.
Can I calculate quantity using 40 kg bags?
Yes. Change the bag weight from 20 kg to 40 kg or any other positive pack size. The required kilograms stay the same, while the rounded bag count changes.
How do I measure a wall before entering its area?
Multiply its length by its height, then add the areas of other walls. Subtract doors and windows, or enter them separately in the openings field.
Will a thicker layer increase the kilograms required?
Usually, yes. The linear estimate assumes a consistent coverage rate. Reduce the entered two-coat coverage if your product instructions or site assessment indicate higher consumption.
Why is coverage given for two coats?
Manufacturers may quote coverage for a defined coat count and thickness. This tool uses an editable two-coat reference to avoid confusing per-coat and combined coverage.
Is 10% wastage always necessary?
No. Ten percent is a planning example. Adjust it for wall repairs, site conditions and application technique.
Does this account for windows?
Yes. Deduct their total area in the openings field before calculating.
