Room Wall Putty Calculator
Estimate the paintable area and putty requirement of a room from its dimensions, openings and optional ceiling.
Calculate in seconds
Update the example values below for your actual wall, brand and project. Results are approximate.
How this calculator works
Four wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height. Add length × width if the ceiling is included, then subtract doors and windows. Convert to square feet where necessary, then estimate putty by dividing by the two-coat coverage and adjusting for coats and wastage.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room with 10 ft high walls has 440 sq ft of gross wall surface. Subtract 35 sq ft of doors and windows to obtain 405 sq ft. At 12 sq ft/kg for two coats with 10% wastage, approximately 37.1 kg is needed, or two 20 kg bags.
What affects your result?
Surface texture and porosity, brand formulation, application thickness and site wastage can change material requirements. Compare your inputs with the manufacturer’s latest product instructions. For further context, see JK Cement’s wall putty guidance and our calculation methodology.
Frequently asked questions
How is the total area of four room walls calculated?
For a rectangular room, multiply two times the sum of length and width by wall height: 2 × (length + width) × height.
How do I include the ceiling in the estimate?
Select the Include ceiling area checkbox. The calculator adds length × width to the room’s four-wall area before subtracting openings.
Does the calculator include skirting or trim?
It treats the entered room as simple rectangular surfaces. Subtract large non-putty areas from openings or measure complex surfaces separately.
Why is the net area smaller than the gross room area?
The calculator deducts doors and windows from the measured walls and any selected ceiling area. The remaining area is used for putty requirements.
Should I measure room dimensions from inside or outside?
Use the interior wall lengths and usable wall height for the surfaces that will receive putty. Confirm measurements on site for irregular rooms.
Does this include the floor?
No. Only four walls and an optional ceiling are considered.
Can I enter measurements in metres?
Yes. Choose metres. The tool converts calculated surface area into square feet.
How do I account for two doors?
Add up the area of both doors and other openings, then enter the total openings area in the selected room unit squared.
